Scale Variation du jour — 10.3.07 — Interesting Pentatonic One

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Sheet music

This one is very bluegrassy. If you get good at pentatonic stuff, if you gain command of where you’re headed in using pentatonic scales (there are more than one but the main one is this major one) then you’re pretty cool.

You can do a similar one ascending. The descending I have posted is actually the same as the first measure or so of the Texas fiddle tune “Brilliancy.” Brilliancy has pickup notes…I’ll post the first part of it on here later.

Another similar thing occurs in the chorus of “Hoedown” by Oliver Nelson (I think). Darol Anger teaches this tune in workshops as a jazz impression of a fiddle tune.

Fiddler’s World

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Welcome to Fiddler’s World. Original works form the core of the album, offset by arrangements of a couple of traditional tunes– the American Shenandoah and a medley of Celtic fiddle tunes. Building on his broad experience in the many styles of fiddling he knows and loves, Zack distills what he’s learned into something identifyable as his own. The title track with its innovative “slam hitting technique” has been featured on NPR’s Open Mic and Bowed Radio.

Arrive anytime after 5:30 for wine and refreshments, check out Martha’s Gardens’ new space on University, put some money in the hat and it will be a good time! We’ve played at our friend Martha’s house many times, and we are excited to be part of welcoming everyone to her new studio. Her mission statement is “I do what I love and what people enjoy. No one knows how the world is going to shape istelf, but as long as people care about art, books and flowers, the world will be a good place to live. I believe, and always have that things of beauty and joy endure.”

This is a free event, where a portion of sales of Holiday things (and also our recording) will benefit the school. There are always some great handmade things and probably some gnomes. There is also an elaborate gnome cave (I’ve seen it in the past and it’s impressive) where young visitors can meet the gnome and receive a gem.
