Oct 24 | Orange Mighty Trio hosts the 416 Club | Cedar Cultural Center | Minneapolis, MN

Orange Mighty Trio hosts the 416 Club
With Japhlet Attias, Badlands and Poutums
Cedar Cultural Center
Minneapolis, MN – MAP

We are excited to curate an evening of local music at our favorite Minneapolis venue.

The other super and amazing local acts begin with Japhlett Attias on the Chapman Stick (plus guest Tuba). The “Stick” is a pretty crazy instrument you play by tapping both hands on a fretboard. It’s possible to play bass lines plus chords and have all kinds of things going at once.

Next up is Badlands, a far-out jazz trio, followed by us, the Orange Mighty Trio.  And rounding out the night we have another jazz group, Poutums, featuring Chris Thomson, Adam Linz (Fat Kid Wednesdays), and Alden Ikeda.

Oct 3 | Orange Mighty Trio | Bach’s Lunch Series at MacPhail | Minneapolis, MN

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Friday, Oct 3 from 12:15-1:00 pm
Orange Mighty Trio
Bach’s Lunch Performance
Macphail Center for Music, Gary Sipes Stage
Minneapolis, MN – MAP

FREE! Arrive early for best seats.

Bach’s Lunch is a performance where we will also answer questions and discuss our music. Here is a description of our presentation, which is entitled, “Crossing Over and Back Again.”

When asked what type of music we play, we often say “bluegrassical”—a tongue-in-cheek term we invented to give people the rough idea of what we do. We have a virtuosic side, combined with folk and commercial influences. Our music fuses elements of classical (drawing especially on chamber music ideas), numerous folk fiddle styles such as Bluegrass and the type complex improvisation that is called for in Jazz. Our classical training and our non-classical experience allow us to play around with many different styles and “flavors,” crossing genres and creating an original sound, that is informed by our more traditional sources.

We will start the program with a few traditional fiddle tunes, and explain the techniques and style points involved. These include idiomatic bowings, rhythmic Turtle Island style bow “chopping,” what we call “slam hitting” bow technique, and “piano-banjo” accompaniment. Then we will then explain how we approach these traditional fiddle tunes and make them our own, and how the traditional tunes inspire our own compositions. We may also discuss our experiences as musicians with our feet “in two different worlds” – crossing over to non-classical, and “Bach” again!

See about it on MacPhail’s site.

Nov 2 | Zack guests with Joy Kills Sorrow | Uncommon Ground | Chicago, IL

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Sunday, Nov 2 from 9:00-10:00 pm
Zack guests with Joy Kills Sorrow (Songstress Katie Quick at 8:00)
Uncommon Ground on Devon
Chicago, IL – MAP

No cover. Get food. Tip us.

Some friends of mine– progressive bluegrass band Joy Kills Sorrow– will be in town and we will be performing together at Uncommon Ground on Devon. We play 9:00-10:00, after a set from Katie Quick. The members of Joy Kills Sorrow are among the top young bluegrass players, in fact, guitarist Matt Arcara took first place at the National Flatpicking Competition at Winfield. They are completing a Midwest tour here in Chicago, after a Minneapolis show with Crooked Still and some other stops. I am excited because they are also coming by the Chicago Waldorf School Open House (where I am teaching) to play and accompany the students in a concert.

If you are coming to Uncommon Ground, please call ahead and reserve a table, so you can avoid the unpleasant situation of not being let in the music area, and it’s hard to hear from the other room.
