3rd Grade Music: Chicken on the Fencepost

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

This is another tune I got at MacPhail.

This is the newest piece that the 3rd Grade violins and violas are doing. It uses the infamous “Chicken on the Fencepost” rhythm, aka “Mississippi Stop Stop” or Suzuki’s Variation A of Twinkle Twinkle. The reason we do this rhythm so much at the beginning, is you are practicing making a good, controlled sound. It helps practice controlling the bow by playing short staccato notes and using a small ammount of bow…the opposite (i.e. long smooth bows using most of the bow length) is quite difficult, so starting with staccato is much more approachable and teaches good sound.

Oct 24 | Orange Mighty Trio hosts the 416 Club | Cedar Cultural Center | Minneapolis, MN

Orange Mighty Trio hosts the 416 Club
With Japhlet Attias, Badlands and Poutums
Cedar Cultural Center
Minneapolis, MN – MAP

We are excited to curate an evening of local music at our favorite Minneapolis venue.

The other super and amazing local acts begin with Japhlett Attias on the Chapman Stick (plus guest Tuba). The “Stick” is a pretty crazy instrument you play by tapping both hands on a fretboard. It’s possible to play bass lines plus chords and have all kinds of things going at once.

Next up is Badlands, a far-out jazz trio, followed by us, the Orange Mighty Trio.  And rounding out the night we have another jazz group, Poutums, featuring Chris Thomson, Adam Linz (Fat Kid Wednesdays), and Alden Ikeda.
