WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Get the perspective of a young professional classical crossover
ensemble! They will discuss how they approach their music, in terms
of arrangement, creation, and especially the role of improvisation.
They will give you tools to try some of their ideas yourself. The
Orange Mighty Trio delivers music that balances the planned with
spontaneous, serious with humorous, in a style that the Minneapolis
City Pages calls “maverick chamber music.” Come find out what makes
them tick.

Chicago Fiddle Camp has come and gone! Thanks to everyone who attended, and to the Chicago Waldorf School for hosting it. It felt good and we’d like to do it again next year…

Open to all bowed strings including violin, viola, cello and bass, the innovative bluegrass-chamber-folk band the Orange Mighty Trio shares its tricks of the trade. The workshop will be led by Zack Kline who has taught privately and at the Mark O’Connor Fiddle Camp and RockyGrass Bluegrass Academy and his bandmates. The Trio will pass on their knowledge of a full complement of modern string techniques and cover topics in improvisation, composing and ensemble playing. We are excited to play this cool space– a former Carnegie Library– where you can browse the interesting assortment of items between the shows.

The WORKSHOP is open to bass, cello, viola and violin students. We will cover fiddle tunes, blues, improvisation, playing well in a group, and the mysteries behind “alternative” string styles.

I will be teaching a workshop dealing with fiddle tunes, styles and improvisation at the Young Fiddler’s Association (in my old neighborhood of Minneapolis no less) at the Tapestry Folk Dance Center. The YFA holds fiddle workshops throughout the year and more informal jam sessions. They also hold a summer fiddle camp.
